Melbourne’s Little Red Schoolhouse
2020: Melbourne’s Little Red Schoolhouse
Melbourne’s Little Red Schoolhouse was built in 1883 and was the first school built in Melbourne on donated land from Mr. John Goode. The school had two teachers, and the school term was about six months during the summer. The school served both white and black children, with the white students attending in the mornings and black students in the afternoons. There was a total of 15 students with 9 white and 6 black.
After a new school was built in 1916 in what is now downtown Melbourne, the little red schoolhouse was no longer used and sat empty. In the early 1940s, the city of Melbourne moved the building to the new Elementary and High School grounds on New Haven Avenue. It was painted red, a picket fence was built around it and, after a while, it was forgotten.
Thanks to the efforts of the Abigail Wright Chamberlin Chapter of the DAR, the Melbourne Rotary Club, and the Historical Society, the schoolhouse was moved in 1970 to the beautiful botanical gardens of the Florida Institute of Technology campus where it stands today.
